The old art collection

The Cluj-Napoca Art Museum holds a collection of old medieval art from the 16th to the 18th centuries. The oldest pieces in the collection are the Predella of the Altar from Șumuleu (depicting Jesus as the Vir Dolorum between angels, probably created between 1510–1526) and the Altar from Jimbor (circa 1520–1525). The collection is complemented by a series of icons from Transylvania, among which the one representing the Archangel Michael stands out, which is a synthesis of Byzantine and Baroque iconographic solutions. From the same group of small-sized icons, we also mention: the icon of Saint Nicholas, two Royal Doors, the Holy Trinity, Jesus the Teacher, and a Triptych—most of them created in the creative 18th century. Some of these works are displayed in the first room of the National Gallery.
