The German Cultural Center in Cluj-Napoca invites you to discover the exhibition “Sibylle Bergemann. Photographien” [Sibylle Bergemann. Photos] which, after 16 years and over 30 tours around the world, arrives in Cluj. The exhibition presents, on an international level, the complete work of one of the most important German photographers of the last decades. Her photographs impress with diversity – from fashion, reportage, essay, landscape, urban scenes and portraiture, and the complexity reflects the artist’s unmistakable style. The social context played an essential role in Bergemann’s work. Her images are marked by a critical confrontation with the GDR. Photography is not just a simple representation, it provides a perspective on reality, interprets it and takes a position. Images become symbols, reflect stories and outline longings in the eyes of the beholder. The exhibition will be presented at the headquarters of the Art Museum in Cluj-Napoca, from February, 27th to March, 16th, 2025. The opening will take place on February 27th, 2025, from 06:00 p.m., in the presence of the curator Frieda von Wild, Sibylle Bergemann’s daughter.

I am interested in the edges of the world, not its center. I am concerned with what’s not interchangeble. What appers on faces or in landscapes and does not seem to fit there… (Sibylle Bergemann, 2008)

Sibylle Bergemann (1941-2010) initially distinguished herself as a fashion photographer, but she was also a representative of the photographic essay, being a thorough and attentive observer. She used to group her photographs into series, following long periods of different themes and photographic notes. A central point of her work is fashion and portrait photography, made for magazines such as Sibylle or GEO. The interest in contextual and scenic images began in Berlin in the 1960s, later expanding to cities such as New York, Paris, Tokyo or São Paulo. Over the years, Bergemann often worked with Polaroid and, until 1990, mainly in black and white. She was one of the few photographers who used color not illustratively, but as an essential element of composition. After German reunification, she co-founded the OSTKREUZ agency and became a member of the Academy of Arts.
