THEOLOGY AND POLITICS AROUND 1525

Two figurative synopses painted in Leipzig and Venice

Conference held by the renowned Italian university professor PhD. GIULIO ANGELUCCI

Thursday, January 23th, 2025, 05:00 PM

The Art Museum in Cluj-Napoca, “Tonitza” Hall

Conference Host: Alexandra Sârbu, curator

The conference aims to illustrate the particularities shared by a work by the German painter Georg Lemberger dated 1522 (i.e. shortly after Martin Luther’s excommunication), and the one by the Venetian painter Lorenzo Lotto, painted between 1525 and 1527 (i.e. just after the publication of Erasmus of Rotterdam’s De libero arbitrio).

Working hundreds of kilometers away from each other while the Western schism was maturing, the two painters proveded two very peculier versions – extraordinarily similar and at the same time opposite – of the iconography of the Crucifixion

The intervention will illustrate the details for which the two artworks are to be considered moments of a close controversy contrasting, in real time, styles and visions of theological and political themes of the Church and society.

The event will take place with simultaneous Italian-Romanian translation.

Free access. Seats are subject to availability.
