ICONOFLUX. Painting, Drawing, Object, Photography

June 26, 2026 - July 12, 2026

The Museum of Art in Cluj-Napoca (MACN), a public institution of county interest operating under the authority of the Cluj County Council, is organizing the collective exhibition "ICONOFLUX", a study-type curatorial project signed by Lina Țărmure. The exhibition will be presented to the public between June 26 and July 12, 2026, at the Museum of Art in Cluj-Napoca. The official opening of the exhibition will take place on Friday, June 26, 2026, starting at 17:00, the event being organized in partnership with the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca within the framework of the Praxis! Emergent Curators’ Days initiative and the Arsmonitor gallery.

Under the title ICONOFLUX, the exhibition explores the multiple forms that the relationship between sacred and profane representation and symbolism can take in contemporary art. The exhibition traces the way religious images are explored, transformed, or even emptied of their original meanings, as well as how images with seemingly profane references continue to retain echoes of a spiritual dimension.

The exhibition brings together the following representative artists for this theme: Horia Bernea, Florin Mitroi, Ion Dumitriu, Mihai Sârbulescu, Alexandru Chira, Bogdan Vlăduță, Gili Mocanu, Anca Mureșan, Ciprian Mureșan, Șerban Savu, Diana Popuț, and Eva Chapkin. Thus, connections are revealed between creators belonging to distinct generations, highlighting surprising affinities and subtle continuities beyond differences in language, medium, or cultural context.

Conceived as a study-type curatorial project, the ICONOFLUX exhibition does not aim to formulate definitive conclusions, but rather proposes an open field of reflection on the image of the sacred that traverses different generations, historical contexts, and artistic practices in contemporary Romanian art.
