The Art Museum in Cluj-Napoca, a public cultural institution that operates under the authority of the Cluj County Council, is organising, from 22 October to 8 November 2026, the solo exhibition “Aproape nimic / Almost nothing” by visual artist Daniela Margareta Chiorean, an interdisciplinary artistic project that explores the transformations of the contemporary city, the fragility of urban memory and the subtle forms of disappearance.

Situated at the intersection of photography, graphic design, typography and digital experimentation, the exhibition invites us to reflect on the relationship between what the city builds and what it, almost imperceptibly, loses.

The title “Almost Nothing” refers to a paradoxical condition of existence: that fragile interval between presence and absence, between what can still be recognized and what is on the verge of disappearing. Beyond its philosophical dimension, the concept becomes a key to interpreting urban reality, in which the accumulation of buildings, the overlapping of architectural forms and the accelerating pace of change produce not only new spatial configurations, but also voids, discontinuities and forms of oblivion.

Drawing on her direct observation of the urban landscape of Cluj-Napoca, the artist constructs a visual atlas of urban disappearance, in which the old houses remaining amongst the blocks of flats, the fragmented façades, the residual spaces, the building sites and the architectural stratifications become testimonies to the tension between the memory of the place and the dynamics of contemporary development.

Within this approach, the photography – both a visual record and a historical and archival source for research – transcends its purely documentary function, becoming the subject of graphic and digital interventions through which the image is fragmented, multiplied, superimposed, eroded or partially obliterated. Thus, the palimpsest, as the exhibition’s central metaphor, evokes the successive layers of urban memory, whilst the digital glitch, through visual distortions and interference, suggests the discontinuity and instability of a city undergoing a continuous process of rewriting.

Similarly, stripped of their administrative function, typographical elements, cartographic structures and fragments of town-planning or cadastral documentation are reinterpreted as autonomous elements of visual language, transforming the traditional tools for measuring, configuring and organizing the city’s physical space into visual expressions of its fragility.

Beyond a possible critical interpretation of urban development, “Almost Nothing” invites us to reflect on presence and absence, on the things that disappear unnoticed, and on the traces that continue to exist in the city’s memory.

“Almost nothing is what can still be seen before it becomes nothing”.
